Apotransferrin administration prevents growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis in serum of stem cell transplant patients by binding of free iron.
We investigated the effect of free, non-transferrin-bound iron occurring in haematological stem cell transplant patients on growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis in serum in vitro, and prevention of bacterial growth by exogenous apotransferrin. S. epidermidis did not grow in normal serum at inoculated bacterial densities up to 10(3) cfu ml(-1) but slow growth could be detected at higher initial ...

BINDING OF NAPROXEN TO SERUM PROTEINS IN PATIENTS WITH LIVER CIRRHOSIS AND HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS
A three-fold decrease of the in vitro ability of serum proteins to bind naproxen was shown in patients with cirrhosis of the liver compared to healthy individuals. This decrease was caused by quantitative changes in serum proteins in the sera of patients with liver damage. Lower doses of naproxen are therefore suggested in the treatment of patients with liver dysfunction.

Background: Cancer is amongst the leading reasons of death in all parts of the world. Breast cancer is also responsible for the largest number of deaths among women population. Several studies confirmed that Bifidobacterium bifidum as a probiotic meaningfully inhibited breast cancer development. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of B. bifidum supernatant on the cell growth inhib...
